I think they are called Matrimonial Squares because people used to bake them for weddings, at least that is what I've always thought.

David and Barbara,I tried to find the origin of the name for the square but my googling didn't turn up the answer. Howevuh, it is a uniquely western Canadian name! Now I am craving one and they are all gone.
