I think they are called Matrimonial Squares because people used to bake them for weddings, at least that is what I've always thought.

I tried to find the origin of the name for the square but my googling didn't turn up the answer. Howevuh, it is a uniquely western Canadian name!

Now I am craving one and they are all gone.
